GENERAL EDITOR GUIDE
On theXifer.net there are two types of editors that allow the modification of EXIF, IPTC, XMP and PDF metadata.

A basic and an advanced version are available. The advanced version is enabled by default only for premium users while the free version is available for everyone.
guide-editor-01
guide-editor-02
Premium users can switch between editors at any time and choose their default editor by simply moving the button visible in the screenshot.
guide-editor-03a
guide-editor-03b
The behavior of the editors changes according to the number and type of file loaded.
If the editing is of a single file the editor will read the information already present in the file and the fields of the form will be pre-filled with them.
If editing involves multiple files the form fields will be empty (it would not make sense to combine the data contained in multiple files).

Both editors contain the following sections:
  • The initial section indicates which files are involved in editing. They can be one or more. Hovering the image will show a larger preview of the uploaded file. guide-editor-04
  • The map is useful for quickly geolocating the file. During a single editing, the position already recorded in the file will be shown on the map (if the file contains geolocation information). guide-editor-05
  • The next section contains two shortcuts that allow you to remove all metadata from the file and make it compatible with Facebook panoramic photos. For more information, there are two dedicated sections that describe these features. EXIF CLEANER and Facebook 360 guide-editor-06
  • The next section is different between free and premium users. Free users will see only the buttons to switch from the basic to the advanced editor (the advanced editor is a premium feature and will be in read-only mode for free users).
    Premium users will also see the presets section. For more information there is a dedicated topic to presets. Form Presets guide-editor-07
  • The next section is the quick tag search and is available only to premium users. For more information there is a section dedicated to the topic. Tag Search guide-editor-08
  • The next section shows the editing form. Both the simple and the advanced form are divided into tabs that contains the editing input fields. In the simple form the tabs are arranged horizontally while in the advanced form the tabs are arranged vertically. The tabs group the tags according to their type and meaning.

    Simple Editor guide-editor-09-simple
    Advanced Editor guide-editor-10-advanced At the beginning of each tab there is a compatibility table to quickly check which files are compatible with the visualized tags.
    The following sections explain the meaning of this table.

  • Each tab is divided into subsections to better categorize the tags.
    At the beginning of each subsection there is a WRITE check. It is used to exclude a specific tags subset from the editing process.
    guide-editor-10
    If you want to keep intact a subset of metadata already present in the file you can exclude them from the editing process.

  • Each tag can be modified via an input field. The header of the input field is divided into two parts: the left part shows the title of the tag and the question mark shows a short description, the right part indicates the accepted format.
    guide-editor-11
    guide-editor-12
  • At the end of the editor there are three buttons. The GO.EXIFING button submits the form let the file modification process start. The CLEAR button clears all the fields of the form without making any changes to the file (you must always press GO.EXIFING to make the change). The CLOSE button closes the form without making any changes. guide-editor-13
BASIC EDITOR
The basic editor is the editor available in the free version of the tool. The editable tags are grouped in tabs to make their identification easier. simple-editor-01 At the beginning of each tab there is a compatibility table that indicates the files compatible with the tags present in the tab. simple-editor-02 WARNING: theXifer.net supports different types of files and tags. Some tags are compatible only with specific file types. For this reason, the tabs in the editor change according to the file that the user is editing.

For example, a .jpg file supports most of the available editor's tags, while a .pdf file supports only a small group of them.
Loading a .pdf file will show fewer tabs than a .jpg file. The editor is designed to facilitate the user by showing him only the tabs compatible with the uploaded file. simple-editor-03 If you're editing a single file, you don't need to worry about checking tag compatibility. The editor will do this by showing only the tags compatible with your file.

If you have a premium subscription and you are editing multiple files at the same time, the visibility of the tags will depend on the files you are editing.
If the uploaded files are all of the same type (eg all .jpg images or all .pdf files) the editor will show only the tags supported from the uploaded format.

If the uploaded files are a mix of two formats (eg some .jpg files and some .pdf files) the editor will show the tags supported by both formats.
In this case you will have to pay attention to the compatibility table at the top of each tab.
Some tabs may be compatible only with .pdf files, others only with .jpg files.
For example, in case of .jpg and .pdf files, the specific tags of the "PDF" tab will be modified only for the relative subset of files, while the tags compatible with both formats will be modified in all files.

The question mark next to each tag will show, on mouseover, a brief description of the meaning of that tag. Next to it will be shown indications on the length and type of data accepted as input.
ADVANCED EDITOR
The advanced editor is available by default for premium users. It allows you to edit many more tags than the basic editor.

Like the basic editor, tags are grouped into tabs. The tabs are arranged vertically instead of horizontally as in the basic editor. advanced-editor-01 At the beginning of each tab there is a compatibility table that indicates the files compatible with the tags present in the tab. advanced-editor-02 WARNING: theXifer.net supports different types of files and tags.

The editor is designed to facilitate the user by showing him only the tabs compatible with the uploaded file. advanced-editor-03 If you're editing a single file, you don't need to worry about checking tag compatibility. The editor will do this by showing only the tags compatible with your file.

If you are editing multiple files at the same time, the visibility of the tags will depend on the files you are editing.
If the uploaded files are all of the same type (eg all .jpg images or all .pdf files) the editor will show only the tags supported from the uploaded format.

If the uploaded files are a mix of two formats (eg some .jpg files and some .pdf files) the editor will show the tags supported by both formats.
In this case you will have to pay attention to the compatibility table at the top of each card.

FORM PRESETS
Presets are a feature available only to premium users. It is possible to save up to a maximum of 30 presets for each basic and advanced editor.
Premium users will still be able to use the basic editor if they like without any limitations with the possbility to save specific presets for it (a maximum of 30 presets).
form-presets-01
form-presets-02
The presets are used to speed up the forms filling. For example, the modification of the same information in files uploaded during different sessions or the editing of copyright information can be speeded up by saving the content of the form and by reusing it later.

Please note that presets can only be used in the editor where they were saved. For example, a preset for the basic editor cannot be applied to the advanced editor.

To save a preset: after filling out the form, click on the ADD button. You will be prompted for the preset name so you can easily recognize it later. The preset will be immediately available in the dropdown.
form-presets-03
It is possible to modify an existing preset using the OVERWRITE button located under the MORE ACTIONS menu. After selecting an existing preset and pressing the FILL button the form will be filled with the preset content. Any further changes can be saved over the same preset by using the OVERWRITE function.

Similarly, it is possible to rename or delete an existing preset using the RENAME and DELETE functions located under the MORE ACTIONS menu.

To apply an existing preset, simply select it from the drop-down menu and press the FILL button. guide-form-presets-04 Please note again that the presets are specific for both basic and advanced form. A preset saved from the basic editor will not be visible in the drop-down menu of the advanced editor as a preset saved from the advanced editor will not be visible in the drop-down menu of the basic editor.
Tag Search
The advanced editor includes a handy tag search function. tag-search-01 It is possible to search for a particular tag by filling in the input text visible in the screenshot. After clicking on a result, the editor will highlight the chosen tag even if it is not in the currently displayed tab. tag-search-02
BATCH PROCESSING
Batch processing are functions designed to work on multiple files at the same time. batch-processing-01 For example, if you need to edit a bunch of images to improve the ranking of a website, most likely the files will all have almost the same content. You can batch edit all the images and then click on the EXIF.ME button for further fine tuning on some of them.

Batch operations can save you a lot of time since the premium subscription allows you to edit up to 30 files in one shot.
Batch operations are only available when more than one file is uploaded or more than one image is selected from the same cloud source.

There are currently three types of batch operations available:

  1. EXIF ALL THE IMAGES: this operation allows you to edit the metadata contained in a batch of images. At the end of the procedure all uploaded files will have the same EXIF metadata. You only need to be careful when working in mixed mode, that is when a batch of files with different extensions are edited. In this case the editor will show the tabs compatible with all uploaded files.

    For example, if images and videos are uploaded together, the metadata supported by the images are not the same as those supported by the videos. Probably the tabs visible in the editor will have full compatibility with images (depending on the type of images) but only some of them will be compatible with videos. Therefore, during the filling of the form it is necessary to pay attention to the compatibility table at the beginning of each tabs. Some tabs will be written to both images and videos, other tabs (so other EXIF, IPTC or XMP tags) will only be written to images as videos do not support them.

    At the end of a batch editing, depending on the size of the batch loaded, the editor will return a message with the result of the operation. If the uploaded batch is smaller than 100.0 MB it will be possible to download it compressed in ZIP format. On the contrary, if the size exceeds 100.0 MB, you will have to close the editor and download each file individually.

    theXifer.net - Batch Processing and Fine Tuning Example
  2. CONVERT ALL THE IMAGES TO .WEBP, .JPG or .PNG: The WebP format has been developed by Google over the last few years and is becoming more and more popular on the web. WebP is a modern image format that provides superior lossless and lossy compression for images on the web. Using WebP, webmasters and web developers can create smaller, richer images that make the web faster.

    For these reasons we have integrated a handy tool that allows not only to edit the metadata contained in .WebP images but also to convert other types of formats into .WebP files.

    The conversion process will leave the medatata contained in the source files untouched. So with theXifer.net it is possible to upload a group of .JPG files, modify their medatata and finally convert the files to the .WebP format in a single shot.

    Furthermore, the conversion system supports other formats that can be converted without any loss of metadata.
    Supported formats are: WebP, TIFF, JPG and PNG. For more information please check the conversion table below.

  3. SYNCHRONIZE DATE TAGS: DateTime tag synchronization is a developed batch operation to standardize DateTime tags within uploaded files.

    A file might have DateTime tags with different values or just DateTime tags missing.
    The operation uniforms the value of the DateTime tags within each individual file.
    Suppose you upload 3 files each containing different DateTime tags:

    image-01:
    • EXIF CreateDate: 2022/05/11
    • EXIF DateTimeOriginal: 2022/01/22
    • XMP DateCreated: 2022/06/14

    image-02:
    • EXIF CreateDate: 2021/01/18
    • EXIF DateTimeOriginal: 2021/03/15
    • XMP DateCreated: 2021/08/04

    image-03:
    • EXIF CreateDate: 2020/06/12
    • EXIF DateTimeOriginal: 2020/08/11
    • XMP DateCreated: 2020/12/16

    Date synchronization allows you to choose a source DateTime tag and copy its content into other destionation DateTime tags.

    The synchronization process will be done file by file. At the end of the process each file will be synchronized to the source tag which may contain a different value for each file.

    For example, choosing EXIF: CreateDate as the source tag and EXIF: DateTimeOriginal and XMP: DateCreated as the destination, the result will be the following:

    image-01:
    • EXIF CreateDate: 11/05/2022
    • EXIF DateTimeOriginal: 11/05/2022
    • XMP DateCreated: 11/05/2022

    image-02:
    • EXIF CreateDate: 2021/01/18
    • EXIF DateTimeOriginal: 2021/01/18
    • XMP DateCreated: 2021/01/18

    image-03:
    • EXIF CreateDate: 2020/06/12
    • EXIF DateTimeOriginal: 2020/06/12
    • XMP DateCreated: 2020/06/12

    Each file has been synchronized to the value contained in the EXIF: CreateDate tag. Please note that the three images had a different EXIF: CreateDate value from each other.

    The normal EXIF ALL THE IMAGES batch process would have written the same value to all DateTime tags of all uploaded files. Date synchronization processed each file individually and synchronized the dates within each individual file.
FILE CONVERSION
Although the main purpose of the eXifer.net tool is to manipulate the EXIF, IPC and XMP metadata contained within files, we have also developed an image conversion system.

Considering the wide diffusion of the WebP format, the tool is able to perform the following conversions
Original Format Supported Conversion Batch conversion
WEBP JPGPNG
YES
JPG WEBPPNG
YES
PNG WEBPJPG
YES
TIF WEBPJPGPNG
YES

For example, you can upload a batch of jpg files, batch edit the file metadata and download a zip file containing the conversion of the images to .WebP format.
GEOTAGGING
The Google Map embedded at the top of the editor is useful to visualize the Geotag Data of your picture.
During the editing of a single file, the data read will be displayed on the map.
If you'd like to Geotag an image or adjust the current cooordinates, you can move the map marker by simply dragging and dropping it.
The GPSLatitude and GPSLongitude values will change as you drag the marker to reflect the selected point's latitude and longitude.
You can also enter your own values into these fiels and click on the button to set the marker on the coordinates entered.

This feature works in both single and multiple editing, so you can batch process your images and embed a specific location into them. geotagging-01 geotagging-02 geotagging-03
EXIF CLEANER GUIDE
The EXIF Cleaner check the top right of the form will clear all EXIF Metadata from your uploaded multimedia files.
By flagging the EXIF CLEANER check the editor will be partially hidden. The purpose of editing will be the total deletion of the metadata from the file. exif-cleaner-01 It can be used in both single file editing and multiple file processing.
Please always check the Upload Limits Table.
FACEBOOK 360 PANORAMA AD VIDEO
This is a shortcut to make photo editing for Facebook 360 faster.
By flagging this function, the form fields will be automatically filled in with the information recognized by Facebook 360. facebook-360-01 It is possible to make further adjustments or changes but the information entered by clicking the flag are those strictly essential to have the image recognized as a panoramic by Facebook.

Facebook currently supports these devices for 360 media:

360 degree Cameras
  • Ricoh Theta S
  • Giroptic 360 Cam
  • Samsung Gear 360
  • LG 360 Cam
  • IC Realtech ALLie
  • 360Fly
  • Panono
iPhone or iPad
  • iPhone 4S or newer
  • iPad mini 2 or newer
  • iPad Air e iPad Air 2
  • iPad Pro
Samsung Galaxy
  • Samsung Galaxy S5 or newer
  • Note 3 or newer
If you've produced your own panorama without using one of these devices you will have to tune the GPano tags to get your picture recognized as 360 media by Facebook.
To do this, you can start by selecting a 360 degree camera from the EXIF tab:
More fine tuning can be made by using the XMP GPano tab, where you'll find all the tags that can transform a flat media to a 360 degree media (it works for both images and videos).

Facebook has a nice article regarding this kind of Metadata injection: Editing 360 Photos & Injecting Metadata
CLOUD EDITING
theXifer.net can be connected to Flickr, Dropbox and Google Drive to edit the contents of these cloud sources.

After establishing the connection with the Cloud source theXifer.net will display only the supported file types. For example .doc files will not be displayed as the editor is unable to edit them.

The operations that can be performed within a cloud source are the same as those that can be performed by uploading a file.

The main difference is that the Cloud's files must be acquired by the exifer in order to be processed. So theXifer.net will download a copy of the original file to process it.

The process of editing a Cloud file can be summarized in the following operations:
  • Login into the cloud source;
  • It is activated a function that needs the local copy of the file. For example: the EXIF.ME button (which reads the file's metadata and opens the editor) or the RAW READER button (which displays the metadata embedded into the selected file);
  • During these operations the source file will be downloaded automatically to our servers;
  • Any change to the file will be made on the local copy. The original file saved in the cloud source will remain untouched;
  • After editing the local copy of the file will be updated with your metadata;
  • The local copy can be either downloaded or written over the original file in the cloud source;
This approach gives maximum editing flexibility to users. google.drive-01 For example, suppose you have a bunch of files to edit on Google Drive. You don't have to download them from Google Drive and then make a new upload to theXifer.net. You can simply edit your Google Drive files and choose whether to replace them or save a copy to your computer.

To better understand how your files are treated while using cloud sources, the previews visible in the app will change color or symbols will appear inside them.

A down arrow indicates that theXifer has downloaded a local copy of the selected photo and it is ready to edit it. Operations such as reading RAW data, or clicking the EXIF button require a local copy of the file. By clicking on this icon, the user can download the file to his computer at any time even if they have not been modified via the app. Multiple operations on previews with this icon will be faster since theXifer does not have to re-download the file.

An up arrow indicates that the local copy of the file has been modified so the user can decide whether to update the file in the cloud source or not.

The green background indicates that the file update operation in the cloud source was successful.

The red background indicates that the file update operation in the cloud source has failed.

A small summary with the meaning of icons and colors is always accessible in the Cloud sections of the tool by pressing the HOW IT WORKS button.
EDITING EXAMPLES
In this section there are some examples of editing in the different modes supported by theXifer.net tool.
SINGLE EDITING EXAMPLE
In this example we will see how to:
  • change the EXIF metadata relating to the camera that acquired it;
  • globally set a new recording date;
  • add IPTC keywords to image;
  • geolocate an image;
  • make a test conversion to another format;
  • display the full metadata details through the RAW Reader;
MULTIPLE EDITING EXAMPLE
In this example we will see the behavior of the editor when files with different extensions are modified at the same time.

It's possible to edit multiple files at the same time, please refer to the Upload Limits Table to check the maximum number of files wich you can proccess in batch.

The upload procedure is the same as described before in the SINGLE EDITING EXAMPLE, the only difference is that instead of using the eXifing button, use the button at the bottom of the page.

This button will bring up the same editor with all the tabs enabled but without any information filled into the form's fields.
This because you're editing multiple files, with different EXIF Metadata already embedded, so it's not possibile to combine the informations together.

The form will be completely blank and everything you'll write will be embedded into all the uploaded files.

In multiple editing the editor will only show the cards compatible with the uploaded files. The visibility of the tabs depends on how many different types of files have been uploaded.

For example, if 10 .pdf files have been loaded, the editor will show only the cards compatible with .pdf files, as in the case of single editing.

If 5 .jpg and 5 .pdf files have been loaded, the editor will show the cards compatible with both types of files.
In this case you will have to pay attention to the compatibility table at the beginning of each card.
Some cards will only work with .jpg files, others only with .pdf files, and others with both types of files.
So when filling out the form it is important to check what information will be written in each file.

Mixed editing allows the user to edit different files in one shot but on the other hand it could produce unexpected results if the compatibility table is ignored.

Please take a look at the supported file extensions at the top of each tab. If you're editing JPG and MP4 files together, for instance, no information apart from that written in the XMP and XMP GPano tabs will be recorded on the MP4 file (because this kind of file only supports XMP and XMP GPano tabs - please check the Medatada Compatibility Table for more informations).
